Eight hours of Insanity: Hurricane Ian Retrospective
Просмотров 430Год назад
We were on the Eye Wall of Hurricane Ian about 6 straight hours. From 2:00 P.M. to almost 8:00 P.M. This is an hour by hour look starting at about 10:00 A.M. I stopped filming the storm about 6:00 P.M. because we were so busy soaking up water at the sliders and wringing them out. I was getting exhausted. The eye wall finally left us as it approached 8:00 P.M. and it slowly started letting up. T...

    Any ideas for those living in the hot desert areas? Barely anything grows here, nothing to forage cos there is no rain... We have vacuum sealed some commercial feed with oxygen remover bags. It should keep the feed good for at least 2 years if done correctly.

    • @TheFloridaprepper
      @TheFloridaprepper Месяц назад

      Chaya might do OK growing in the desert with occasional watering. Can feed fresh or boiled and dried and crumbled. Try setting up something that you can harvest insect larvae with. Any kind of common weed is worth a try and if there are ant or any other insect colonies scattered around, give that a look.

    You're not the first person to mention loquat, but they are _highly_ disease prone, even in the arid climate here in soCal, based on what I've seen. I am looking for fruiting trees/plants that are a good match for Punta Gorda, which is where my mom is located. I've planted a couple varieties of prickly pear (that I smuggled there from CA in a pizza box) that are doing phenomenal. I planted the pads in December, and they've already tripled in number. I also started 2 LSU Purple figs, and those are thriving too. The RubyCrisp muscadine is beginning to work its way up the trellis I built. It is not of major concern and should also be OK since it is native to that area. I planted a 6" loquat in a pot (for now--and that I also smuggled from CA) that is in very poor condition. I'm not there and can only guide her from the pictures she sends. It was in a black pot, so I think the roots got cooked and now have root rot. My question is this: should the loquat not survive until I return in November, what other fruiting plants/tree(s) can be grown in her area that require minimal care, have high disease/insect/varmint resistance, and don't grow to be huge behemoths? I know cactus are "idiot proof" with figs being a close second. I really like California Date Palms, but don't think they will grow there, with the dampl climate and 2-3' water table. She is a senior, and I want to make this easy for her. She's never grown any food/fruit bearing plants, but we gotta take advantage of the real estate and the weather down there! You must be in Bokeelia. You guys lucked out. The storm surge ruined my home, my cars, my life. We are still fighting the insurance companies. Our home is only 20% complete. Don't know what we will do when FEMA takes the trailer back. If we are ever financially able after this, we are out of here. How can you put all that work into a homestead only to know that it can be washed away in an instant. You can't. We, like fools, stayed for the chickens. Of course, most of them drowned. We don't know what we were thinking. Never again. I put some videos up if you want to see what we went through. Ruined my dreams of semi-retiring, back to work full time with over 50k of loans. I was freaking debt free. As far as preparing, you can prepare all you want, but lose it all in an instant. Community is what came through for us. People helping people is where it is at. Thank you, neighbors, Matlacha Hookers and Mullet Runners...I would have went completely insane without you!

    If anyone has birds for eggs and meat and the SHTF plant seeds that will grow and produce more seeds that has high protein even if you have to grind it up to feed it but plant enough to last in the mean time stock up on other stuff that has high protein even if you have to take a drive in the country to get it like berries that birds love to eat... It's not hard to find out what birds love to eat when just look at wild bird seed and then start Google each seed and some are very easy to get and you can plant them and if you can't then talk to different people that lives in the country that may allow you to plant a small plot and you don't even have to work the land just mow the plot and spread the seeds that it bottom line is its easy to find different ways to make high protein feed for the birds.. AND that stands for people that lives more further north you live in

    Everglades tomatoes are much smaller than the average cherry tomato. I grow them year round here in south Florida. They are the size of blueberries and pack a tomato flavor that can't be beat. We've had so much fun gifting the tomatoes to friends and neighbors and watching their shocking reaction when they pop some in their mouth. A couple of negatives about the plant... they are a wild tomato from Florida and they grow wild, really wild, lol! They have many shoots that grow four feet long in all directions. The shoots are covered with flowers and very shortly tomatoes. You will never be without tomatoes with this plant. You do have to harvest them soon after ripen as they do not stay well on the plant. You will want to keep the plants pruned. Also, if the tomato falls off the bush and onto the ground, it will grow many baby plants like crazy and they can get out of hand pretty quickly. You will want to keep these plants in a pot to help control them or they will take over your yard/garden. Good management makes these plants worth the effort. The tomatoes they produce are the best kept secret Florida has.
